Latissimus Dorsi Flap Implant
Having undergone a right mastectomy previously, this 59 year old woman was unhappy with wearing an external prosthesis. She consulted with Dr. Leonard for breast reconstruction and her surgical oncologist regarding a left mastectomy. She elected to have a left mastectomy, and then do staged breast reconstruction. She had a latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction, where skin, tissue and muscle are taken from the back and rotated to the front to replace the skin taken from the mastectomies. Tissue expanders were placed at this time. Final implants were high profile, round, silicone gel. The final stage was nipple reconstruction and tattooing. She has no loss of strength or function and she is delighted with her results. She has much more confidence in all her activities.
